Who do I call if I have lost all or part of my vision?

This is one of the most common questions we receive. WCBNY is not staffed or funded to provide the training and support folks need when they are new to vision loss and going through the initial adaptation that is often required. We are, however, happy to provide moral support and point you toward the resources that you need.

The starting point for most people is, and should be, the New York State Commission for the Blind. Their website is here: https://ocfs.ny.gov/programs/nyscb/

The State Commission’s district office is in Westchester, in Valhalla. Here is the number to call: (914) 993-5370

The State Commission’s website also has an extensive page of resources. It is located here: https://ocfs.ny.gov/programs/nyscb/links.php

Other resources are available, but we advise contacting the State Commission first, as they are equipped to evaluate your specific needs and advise you as to what assistance you are entitled to receive.

So what does WCBNY have to offer?

We are a peer-to-peer support group. We are an all-volunteer organization focused on helping the blind and visually impaired people in our community live their best lives. That effort involves:

    • Providing experienced and knowledgeable advice from peers who understand.
    • Educating and raising awareness.
    • Advocating with local government on issues important to our community.
    • Advocating, through our state and national affiliates with those levels of government.
    • Providing opportunities for social interaction and engagement.
